How we work out the cost per serving

Every recipe includes a short receipt. We price the main ingredient with a U.S. average or a large-retailer price checked in September 2026, add an allowance for rubs, sauces and sides, and add fuel at about $0.75 per hour, the typical cost of budget pellets or charcoal at smoking temperatures.

Your local prices will be different, but the comparison holds: smoking your own food almost always costs a fraction of buying it cooked.
